My 87 s-15 4x4 2.8 makes this buzz saw noise from the front every 5 to 10 minutes while I am going down the road even on the straight roads and in 2 wheel drive. This noise has continued the same even after I replaced both front wheel bearings, and starter. I have no idea what to look at next.

Disconnect the 4X4 actuator hose and plug the hose. See if the noise stops. If it does then change the 4X4 vacuum switch on the transfer case. It is leaking vacuum enough that it is pulling the axle disconnect partially in. What you're hearing is the disconnect collar trying to engage.
