Hey,
I used to have a 93 Grand Am that did the same thing mostly when it was humid or very damp. The car would dtick in high idle and it was hard getting it back down. Usually had to put it in drive right away and drive for a coulpe of miles before the high idel would kick out. Unfortunately, I was never able to get a proper diagnosis on the problem and had to live with it. If you could hook it to a scope when the problem occurred, it would probably show the problem. I could never get it to go into high idle on demand though. Maybe you might be luckier if it happens when you wash the car. Good Luck
I miss my Grand Am
