I was told by dealer that my front side axle seal and C/V boot are both leaking, and seal and boot needs replaced. What is this? Also if I don't have this done what are the future problems and concerns that may develope. How costly is this repair and time involved thanks

Well if they are both on the same side that is actually a plus. Cheaper labor rate since the half shaft has to be removed to change the seal.

The axle seal is a piece that keeps the axle lube from leaking out and causing problems if it runs out. The C/V joint boots hold in the grease and keep dirt out of the constant velocity joints. They age and then crack or split. That lets the grease out and worse it lets dirt in. The problem is getting all the dirt out and making sure the joints isn't already damaged. The BETTER solution to a torn boot is to simply replace the entire half shaft. You get new boots, new grease and since the part has to come out to change the seal anyway the only real difference is in the price of a half-shaft versus a boot replacement, which is almost a wash.

Cost wise it depends on who is doing the work. An independent shop will likely be MUCH cheaper than a dealer. A rebuilt half shaft is about $75.00 for a good one, the seal is about $10.00. BUT you can expect the dealer to at least triple that. Time wise it shouldn't take much over 2 hours.
