If you have some wrench-monkey friends, ask them if they have an engine code reader. They're pretty simple to use. Plug in to a socket underneath the driver-side dash, and you can read the codes that the vehicle is outputting. This will give you an idea what the problem is. If you can't find a friend with a reader, you might call some of your local auto parts stores to see if they would read your engine codes for you.
The transmission thing, you may have done this already, but you should check your transmission fluid first if it seems delayed shifting. That is a 4L60E transmisison. In that era, those transmissions were notorious for a failing sun shield. When that piece fails, it turns to a metallic gritty pollutant in your fluid and trashes the transmission. If this has happened to you, you'll be able to feel the gritty substance in the fluid on the end of your transmission dipstick.
