When it is hot outside my jimmy shuts down. The oil gave fluzuates when I am driving

Oil gauge jumps up and down due to the oil sending unit located just behind the distributor. However ive never seen that to cause these to just die. Any other info you can give will help. Is there a check engine light on? When did it start doing this, etc
