Engine Performance problem
1998 GMC Envoy 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 159K miles

The engine misfirines underload. It idles smooth. The odometer shows 159K miles.

Disconnected the MAP sensor while troublshooting. This resolved the misfiring and made the vehicle drivable. Obviously this is now masking the real problem.

When reving the engine in neutral gear, the misfiring occurs in the mid-range rpms. When this happens, an incomplete combustion smell eminates from the exhaust. (Must not be lacking fuel- maybe ignition timing problem?)

Checked for vacuum leaks, none found. Measured vacuum at idle- 19".

While resolving a previous problem the following components have been replaced within the past 6 months: plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, new fuel injectors/spider, MAP sensor, EGR valve, new vacuum hoses, new ignition module, cleaned PCV valve.

OK, I'm stumped. Any further suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Hi
The scanner your using does it have GM software or generic? Usually when unhooking MAP solves problem then O2 sensors are not responding fast enough and possible convertor issue. Does missfire appear on one cylinder more than others?
Let me know

My scanner is generic. I do not get any other codes but P0300.

The misfire does not sound like a one cylinder problem. There is no regularity to the "miss".

It is an over-all "stumbling" where the engine is acting like an air-fuel ratio problem. I'm assuming it is running rich due to the smell of the exhaust.

Hi
Need to have diagnostic scan done to determine fault a code reader is not adaquate. You will end up replacing more parts with poor results. The P0300 is by far the most difficult code to diagnose even for the most experienced Tech.

Yes it is sold as a scaner but all it does is read codes. A diagnostic scan tool such as Snap MODIS, Pro-LinkiQ or Nexiq is the equipment needed.
