First, I'm very sorry to hear about your son. I have two of my own and don't know what I would do if something happened.
As far as the light, it could be a problem with the switch, actuator. If there is an Auto Zone near you or Advance Auto, contact them and see if it's something they could check. If they can, it will most likely be free of charge.
