Gear shift will not engage gears

I have the V-6 engine, automatic transmission, 4X4. The gear shift will slide out of park, but the indicator remains on park and the gear shift does not engage any gears. I have checked the fuse, the transmission fluids have been changed as well. Aside from a costly repair, is there anything else I can check before having to get my truck towed?

it may be a harness problem at switch on transmission or the switch is bad, but it should be scanned for codes to find out what if anything electrical is doing it.
