There is a clicking sound coming from the gear shift. It is pretty loud. I need to know what's wrong and how to fix it?

Hi MomDavis,

Is there any way you can get a recording of this noise? Also, when does it make the noise? In park, driving, when you are pressing and releasing the brake? Did it just start making the noise or has it done this since you bought the vehicle? Lastly, did you just but the vehicle or have you had it for a while?

Let me know this info and we can figure this out. Thanks

I don't really know how to record and send. But it makes the noise once I get to 10 or more miles per hour. Once its below 10 miles per hour it makes no noise. It is loud and sounds like clicking or maybe like a card on a bicycle wheel. I have had the car for a year or two. I took it to my mechanic and they said the transmission sounds good and tight. And no problem with the drive shaft. I would just like to know the problem before I over pay for things that aren't a problem. Plus they didn't know and guessed that it might be a carrier bearing. However, the heat shield was loose and he fixed that. But it still makes the noise. I have an appointment for Tuesday. So I'd like to know before I take it in.

So if this is a rotational noise it is more than likely a bearing noise however, it does not make sense that it is coming from the gear shifter. When it is making the noise, can you feel it in the gear shifter or just hear it?

Just hear it. When I touch the shifter. There is no vibration or anything.

Okay. This sounds like a bearing. I am not sure which bearing but the output shaft bearing is pretty close to just below the shifter. This would make sense. However, without checking it out, I am not confident that this is the issue. Unfortunately, trying to diagnose a noise with just having it described to you is not the most definitive way. Also, this is not a common issue on these cars that I could say I know exactly what you are hearing because the "all do it."

Sorry I can't be more certain for you but if you can get a recording of it, I may be able to help more.

If you have a smart phone, you just take a video while the issue is happening (have someone else drive while you video or vice versa) so we can get the audio and then upload it to the site by clicking on "add image or video" below the text box. Find the video in your phone and submit it.

Let me know if you are having trouble and I will see if I can assist further with this.

Just got my car back from the mechanic. They replaced the carrier bearing and it's fixed. It costed $275.00. Thanks for your help.

That’s great. Thank you for the update. The carrier bearing is in the rear so it was transferring up the driveshaft to make it sound like it was just under the shifter.

Thanks for using 2CarPros
