Appears to be leaking from the Pittman shaft. My buddy went through this on his Denali and had a gear box I could use so I swapped the seals inside. So, I took off the 4 bolts holding the pitman shaft/arm and got the shaft out of the box. Took out old seals, cleaned the box up and installed the new seal kit. My question is the new seals when installed in the shaft I tapped into place, but they seemed to have slight play. Is that normal? I expected them to be in there solid. Any advice?

Hi,

I need confirmation of the seal you are referring to. I attached an exploded view below of the steering gear. I'm seeing O-rings. Let me know which you are referring to by number.

Also, I agree with you. If the seal was loose, that doesn't sound right.

Let me know.

Joe

So, when the Pittman shaft? Was out so I can get the o rings # 16-13, I put new ones in the same order they came out, but the snap ring was the only one that actually fit and didn’t move. The others had slight play - I tapped them all the way to the inner bearings. And once it slid the shaft in and bolted up. It looks like I knew what I was doing but idk if it will create a leak or what not.

Hi,

I suspect it is going to be fine. If you had the pitman shaft out, you should be fine. It shouldn't leak. The only thing I always recommend is to lubricate the new o-rings (in this case) with power steering fluid to help prevent damage to the O-rings.

At this point, I would install it. As mentioned, I feel you will be fine.

Let me know how things turn out for you.

Take care,

Joe
