While driving the fuel light turns on and fuel gauge goes down to empty?

When driving my vehicle, the fuel light turns on, and gas gage goes down to empty then when the light turns off the gas gage goes back to where it was, it only stays on very little time! Not even long enough to get a picture! Could u have any idea what may be the problem?
