Runs in drive car been sitting for 3 years. Drove recently shifted into 4th gear and the car shut off. No lights on dash as soon as I take positive cable of and reinstall on battery, the car will start up and drive for another 1/4 mile shut off again. Can it be bad fuel? Please help!

Hello and thanks for your question!

If the car was sitting for 3 years and the gasoline was not drained, that would be the first thing to do, to drain the system and fill with fresh gasoline. Injector / fuel line additives won't hurt either. Now that the car has been running, there is a chance that some internal parts like fuel injectors and / or fuel pump etc. have been damaged by running bad gas. But first I would try a gas tank flush.

Whether or not the gasoline is the exact problem is hard to say. Does the car shut off only in 4th gear every time? If so, I would be suspecting clutch issues.

Please refer to our guide below:

Aside from the gasoline, the MAF could be the culprit, or even the crankshaft / camshaft position sensor. Is there a check engine light? Even if there is not, I would scan the CAN system for codes.

Check out our guide to reading engine codes:

Let us know how it goes,
William
