1983 Ford Truck Dies at Idle

i have a 1983 ford truck 302. my truck is not running at the moment. when i start the truck it will stay on as long as i keep my foot on the gas pedal then when i remove my foot the truck will shut off. sometimes the truck will stay running even when i remove my foot but, as soon as i try to put it in drive it will die. so my question is what would cause this and can i do it myself?

it could be just about anything but i would first start with the basics....replace the plugs and do a basic tune up if that dosent help much check all your vacuum lines and make sure they are all connected and none are torn lemme know good luck :)
