car cranks but wont start

i have a 1992 lincoln town car and was driving it ans it just died. Now it cranks and wont start. it keeps blowing the fuel pump fuse. when replaces the fuse blows with in seconds. what couls be the problem?

Defective fuel pump relay or the fuel pump. It is in the gas tank good luck

thank you. will that fuel pump relay blow the fuse? the auto repair places said it wouldnt but talk to another tech and said it would

10% chance it is the relay and 90% the fuel pump. Good luck

if you smell gas when it trys to turn over is it the fuel pump? so people have us confused one says one thing and another another thing

If you smell gas and the fuel pump fuse is blown it is residual fuel. I strongly suspect you have a bad fuel pump. It is a bear to replace as the tank has to be dropped. The less fuel in the tank the better. Good luck and don't get confused, it is a simple problem.

wel we have checked a lot of things and yesterday when we put another fuel pump relay in it blew the fuel pump fuse as soon as u try to turn it over so we will now try the fuel pump but when u trun the key u hear a winning nosie from the gas tank.

If the fuse is blown, key on, the pump can't run unless you have a major wiring malfunction.

The fuel pump is in the tank and a bear to change, make sure the tank is low on fuel when you drop the tank. Below is a listing of different pumps that apply to your car. Good Luck

well the fuse didnt start blowing as quickly until we change the fuel pump relay out now u dont hear the winning nosie now as soon as u try to turn it over it blows befrore that it took trying to turn it over a couple times before it blew.

we changed the pump today.. it still blows a fuse. any suggetions?

Humm Looking at the schematic I see that there is an impact interia sw that opens when you have an accident killing the fuel pump circuit. The pink and black wire goes to the fuel pump and the dark green and yellow goes to the relay. That wire also goes to the ECM.

You might want to check out that circuit. the sw is located in the trunk. Good luck

we have replaced the fuel pump switch and the relay . but still blows a fuse. could there be a wire grounded and or something. is there a diagram on how the wires run from the fuel pump to the relay and shut off switch and the fuse box.

To check the wires to the relay- remove the relay, remove it and turn the key on. No blow wires are good.

There is no physical lay out of the wires only a schematic.

But I would un-plug the switch and turn the key on. If the fuse blows it is in the relay circiuit.

Next un-plug the fuel pump. If it blows then it is in the wiring. If not the problem is with a bad connector on the tank side of the pump. It is common on Ford trucks but rare on a Town car.

so take the relay out and then try to turn the key if it blows the it between the relay and fuse box or where?

The only thing between there is the self test socket and the computer with the realy out of the circuit.. Unplug the computer and try it. If it blows we'll look further

You have to physically trace the wire by hand. This invilves opening the wiring harness. At least you isolated it to a wire and not a processor. You will find a nick in the wire and it will be eay to find, just patience and persistance.

There is no wiring layout as each car has a little different twist in the wires. Pull the fuse and the relay and use an ohm meter to find the short Good luck

on my tc pink/b wire runs across front of condenser and had break in it above pass side frame

where is the condenser located at? also the fuel pump is working before but now you cant hear it could we have blown it messing with fuses. also when we put bigger fuse in it started but cut out could it just need bigger fuse to run on? but when u tak ethe relay out the fusr dosent blow and if the relay in and the shut off switch is out then it dont blow. any suggestions

The very worst thing you can do is to put in a larger fuse. It heats the wires and they melt together and you will have a mess.

Like I said in an earlier post disconnect the fuel pump and see if it blows a fuse.

The condenser is part of the A/C system and is in front of the radiator.
