Recently we discovered that the cooling fan on the radiator is making a steady loud humming noise. We know it is the fan because we unplugged and then plugged it back in. I hit a rabbit and the sound seemed to start around that time.

a vw rabbit?@!?!?!?!? joking on that.

i dont feel thats what done it, it is probably time that the cooling fans motor went out or it could be that the blade is loose on the fan shaft.
