I just replaced the rear heat/ac control switch on the front dash panel and fixed the problem where the front a/c worked fine, but the rear air conditioner blew hot air.
The switch cost $30 from the local Ford dealer. When I bought the switch from the Ford dealer the Parts guy told me (years back) they sold/replaced a ton of these since they were a known problem.
It took me less than 1 hour to pop off the dash panel, replace the old switch & reinstall the panel. I am no mechanic, just had the desire to try it myself and not pay the mechanic about $200 to replace.
The steps I took were:
-I opened/pulled out the "cheezy" cup holder
-Removed the cup holder completely, by pushing down on a tab on the top of the cup holder with a small screwdriver. You have to get down close to the floor and look at the top of cup holder to see the tab
-Removed the 2 screws that fastened the panel to the dash
-Removed the front dash panel, by using a small screw driver to pry back the panel (just a bit) so I can get my fingers behind the panel and jerk the (6 or so) tabs from their holes
-With panel removed, I unscrewed 4 screws that held the switch plate in place
-Removed 1 screw to remove rear a/c switch from the switch plate
-Pulled out the 2 a/c contacts from the switch
-Plugged in the new switch with the 2 contacts and immediately tested before reassembling
And voila it worked!
