Transmission problem
1997 Ford Thunderbird V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

with car in overdrive mode. I put car in reverse it sputters and wants to die and has several times. Then I put it into drive and it sputters and gerks a bit. When I start to slow down when approaching a stop light the car wants to die. I have to put it in neutral and give it some gas. Had the transmission rebuilt about 6 months ago. I pushed the button that turns off the overdrive and car runs fine. The check engine light has been on for awhile.

Sounds like you have a problem with the torque converter clutch solenoid in the transmission. This is a relatively easy fix. You need to drop the pan and replace the solenoid, or bring it back to the tranny guy, he will probably hook you up. Hope this helps
