I have a 98 Ford Taurus, 3.0 V6 with 171,000 miles. When I turn the car off the coolant fans continue to run. Would this be due to a faulty temperature sensor?

No it is perfectly normal for a electronic fan to run when the engine is off. It cools the engine down while it sits which is also very important.

What if they are running so long as to run the battery down?

Do not worry. They turn at a realitively slow speed and will not run down your battery

My 1996 Ford Taurus' fan will run until the battery is dead. From what I've read it could be the either the The High Speed Cooling Fan Relay, which is located at the left of battery behind headlamp in the relay center box #1, or the Low Speed Cooling Fan Relay, which is located in the engine compartment fuse/relay box. Maybe I'll learn more tomorrow.
