The water tube from the engine, (behind the thermostat housing) has rusted off and the rear expansion tube can not be connected. I have checked my Haynes Repair Manual but that was not helpful. Can the just the tube be replaced or am I looking at replacing the whole thing? If replacing the whole part is required what is the name of the part?

Are you talking about the heater and bypass hose? The metal part rusted and the rubber part is good? Or do you mean the tube that runs from the water pump to the back, thru the engine valley?

No to the heater and bypass hose, repaired that a few years ago. No to the water pump hose.
There is a outlet tube about 1 inch behind where the thermostat housing connects to the water-jacket. A hose connects to the tube and runs across the upper manifold to the back of the expansion tank.
If you have a Haynes Ford Taurus & Mercury Sable 1996 thru 2001 Repair Manual handy, look in Chaper 3 Cooling, heating and air conditioning systems under Thermostat- check and replacement. The diagram 3.8 shows the tube very clearly.
Don't worry about it, the problem is solved. I repaired it 5 hours ago and took a 3hour trip to test the results.
A trip to Home Depot to purchase a 1/4" brass Barb x Barb Splicer, some EP 400 Epoxy Putty and a new hose clamp was all that was needed to repair the problem. Once again I foiled the Ford Company from charging me a stupid amount of $ for a complete part when there was only a small problem.
I must say that the EP-400 Epoxy Putty works much better then JB Weld and is easier to use.
Never under estamate the power and mind of a women on a tight buget. : )
Thanks anyway for your time.
