Find a local autoparts store that will read your pcm for stored codes, i'm surprised Pepboys didn't do it.A breakout box is not needed unless so-called pinpoint tests are run, which are not until whatever issue is indicated by the check light, is attempted to be resolved. In a lot of instances, it is still not needed. If you get, say a code for the egr pressure sensor, makes more sense just to initially replace the sensor then paying a qualified repair shop to diagnose further, if new part doesn't solve the issue, then further testing is certainly warranted. The advice about not wasting $$$ on uncertain part replacement is very good though
