Hi I have a 06 ford ranger shortbed regular cab, and engine runs great, but everynow and then it just dies. Sometimes it can start back up in 5 minutes, sometimes it takes 2 hours, I've checked when it wont start and it does have spark, I heard that the fuel pump relays go bad, so I changed it, but still same problem, Now I'm guessing its the fuel pump, but it's a pricey unit inside the gas tank, I just wanna make sure it cant be anything else. Any ideas would be greatly appreiciated.

Thanks John

Check you have fuel at plugs when cranking after it has died

I have the same issue with my 03, however what is really strange is that I can be driving at 70 mph and then the engine just dies on the highway. It doesn't just shut down, it actually decelerates completely until the engine stalls. I still have power steering and things like that. Also if I am lucky I have actually downshifted when this happened on the highway into either 3rd or 4th gear and pumped the gas pedal then with a hard jerk the engine fires back up and I can continue driving. I have noticed though that in my ranger there is a fuel shut off switch under the dash on the passenger side and this gets extremely hot whenever the truck dies as if the switch is shorting out. Not sure if that is the issue, but any advice would also help as not only is this annoying as hell but not so safe when the truck dies on the highway in the middle of rush hour.
