I am trying to replace the fuel filter. The hose from the gas tank I disconnected with no trouble. The line going to the engine is metal fitting and I can not see how to disconnect it.

I tried to upload a picture but couldn`t get it to work -- hit the uplaod button and nothing happens

The fitting to the engine didn`t appear to split like the one in your picture but I finaslly found out what the little plastic tool was for. Put it aroung the shaft of the filter and push it into the body on the gas line steel fitting therefore releasing the holding spring inside,
Thanks for your help

To find your filter, just start at the gas tank and follow the fuel line toward your engine. I believe your filter is on the frame rail.
If you never replace your fuel filter before, go ahead and do it; it might fix your problem. It's an easy job (and a cheap one), and even if it doesn't fix your problem it needs to be replaced anyway.
To confirm a problem with your fuel system, do a fuel pressure test; if pressure okay, your filter is not the problem (I would still replace it though).

Come back if you still have the same problem after you replace it.

-Check your fuel pressure; if low suspect your fuel pump, relay, low voltage at the pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, leaky fuel injectors.
-Check compression in each cylinder; if low suspect leaky/blown head gasket, worn valve, cracked cylinder head.
-Check your ignition system (your must have a strong spark for your car to operate smoothly). If you never replace the plugs and wires, and inspected the coils, now is a good time.

If all the above is okay, you could still have problem with a sensor, or a big vacuum leak.
Have your car scanned for codes if you haven't done it already. It should tell you what the problem is.

HI,

I have a 1990 ranger. Although it's not the same year as your, a lot of time different year models are built the same.

I changed my fuel filter a couple of months ago.
It only took me 5 minutes. Mine was located on the driver side, on the frame, under the bed.
Crawl under your truck, look for the fuel line that goes from your tank to your engine. This line is attached to the rail that support the bed; you should find the filter on that rail.
If your is located just like mine, it's not exactly under the driver seat (close though), but more under the bed.

Hope this helps!
