When I am driving down the road the truck surges and eventally dies it will crank back but keeps surging and when it dies the battery light comes on

That is normal for the battery light. IF the engine dies, the alternator isn't producing any power.

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked for vacuum leaks, have you checked fuel pump pressure?
