1) You might want to look at the position of the actual electrical switch for the ignition.
On my Explorer. The switch is located further down the steering column. If the switch is loose or improperly positioned, the starter circuit could stay energized and keep the starter engaged.
2) try to start the car by applying 12 volts to the control side of the starter relay. Does the starter stay engaged? If it doesn't happen that way then I would guess that it is in the ignition switch.
