I have a 289 and when it is cool it runs great. However, it seems that when the thermostat opens at 180 degrees, the car begins to run very rough. When accelerating the it is a bit better than holding at a constant speed. I can see the RPM gauge jumping up and down quite a bit. I have popped off the plug wires from the distributor while running hot and the 7 and 8 cylinders fire infrequently. I can move the 5 or 6 plug wire to the 7 and 8 spot on the distributor and they fire just fine. I have put in new plugs, plug wires, and a new coil.

I don't think it is a head gasket, cause I don't have white smoke, antifreeze in the oil, or oil in the coolant.

I am at a loss.

Thanks,

Chance

Your best bet is just replace the wiring set. You need a DVOM to test the resistance of the wire, anything over 30K ohms I consider it bad-
