Hello, Noticed three nights ago that transmission selector light was out. Took old bulb to auto parts and purchased new one. Installed new bulb. Closed battery knife switch and turned ignition on to see if bulb lit. Wire started smoking. Turned off ignition and opened battery connection. Pulled bulb. Wire not smoking now. The wire is blue and red. Checked all accessory items. All work except turn signals. Fuses, flasher pots, and, bulbs all ok. When turn signal is in left turn position and brake pedal depressed, the brake light goes out. Same for the right side. I'd say the smoking wire is indicative of a ground short but I cannot find it. My Chilton's manual doesn't even show the PRND2L light or any wire running that way. Any ideas where to look? Thanks.

You probably have disturbed another wire to ground out to cause the smoke. Alot of times the flasher is bad that causes what you describe. But, these cars had aproblem of burning the wires at teh back of teh ignition switch which I think is still in the dash on this model. Ford used to offer a repair for the switchit you check behind the switch it will be easy to spot as the wires will be all burnt back about a half inch. And was the bulb that you replaced the correct one or "this one should work"? It may be to long and forcing the wire out to ground against the socket. A good thing would be to put the old bulb back in and still see if it smokes again.
