Engine Cooling problem
2004 Ford Focus Two Wheel Drive Manual 26000 miles

HI

My 04 Ford Focus seems to have a problem. I had a problem with my Rev counter going so low that it seem as if my car would stall. The lights on my dash would flicker and a fan would start in my engine. I took it to a mechanic and he changed the petrol filter and the problem seemed solved, for a day.

Now the Rev counter does not go up and down as much but whenever I stop in traffic the fan starts. I hear a click from my engine and then it kicks in every time I come to a stop. This also happens if I keep my foot on the clutch and the car is still rolling.

It has been plugged in to two different diagnostic machines and both showed no faults. The mechanic recommended that I just sold the car but its only done 26k miles so I want to keep it.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated

Ricky

Ok one problem at a time first lets work on the cooling fan problem. I need to know if you have a digital multi meter? If so then get back to me and I will look over the wiring diagram and see what could cause the fan to start up like that. I also need to know what model of focus like zx2 or what? Get back to me and we will go from there.

It is a Ford Focus 1.6 Edge and I dont think it has got a digital multimeter. I have also had the battery checked and that appears to be fine. My battery has been disconnected so it would reset my engine management.

When the car is cold the car is fine, its only once its been running for awhile that the problems start.

Looking at the wiring diagram for your car I can see no reason why the fan would come on when you step on the brake unless it is backfeeding through the fuse box. These circuits are completely seperate and share nothing except the fuse box. Also I find not ford focus edge with a 1.6ltr. I find Ford Focus LX or SE, SVT, ZTS, ZTW, ZX3 and ZX5 and all have a 2.0ltr SOHC or DOHC or the 2.3 ltr DOHC. Get back to me so I can help. Thanks

ANytime my foot is off the gas, I hear the click and the fan starts. I have the cooling fan sensor chip replaced but nothing as changed. I am in the UK and the Edge was a special edition Ford Focus.

Do you think I should get my fuse box checked? If I could sort out my rev counter im sure the fan would be a lot better

I think you should check the gem module first. It is the module that controls most all of the electrical. If you have a digital multi meter I can walk you through the tests. This car is a UK model only so some wiring colors may be different as I only have a data base for US models. Let me know what you want to do.

I changed my fan from demister to blower and it has now completely stopped. No problem now at all. I cant believe how much money I have spent on it and then I changed that and its fine.

Would this now give you any idea of what the problem is?

What is demister? Is this defrost mode to what mode? Are you refering to the blower motor fan for the heater? I was thinking when you said cooling fan that you ment the engine cooling fan. Get back to me so we can figure out whats going on here.
