Was there a lot of sediment in the filter?
Can you check the fuel pressure when the problem is happening to verify it is fuel related?

The filter you could have tapped out the sediment on the return side, but it is probably too dry at this point.
The fuel prssure can be checked by attaching a fuel gauge to the test port, and running the gauge up to the windshield and taping it there so you can monitor t while your moving.
