What type of transmission? How many miles on the motor?

What kind of gas mileage are you getting? For a 1992 F-150, 5.0L with average miles, I've seen them get as high as 17-19mpg on the highway with a manual trans. And as low as 10-13mpg.

If you have the C6 transmission, then I would expect you to get a lower mpg reading. It has no overdrive, and 1st is geared really high, so it takes some revs to get the truck going.

The AOD and E4OD trannys both have overdrive, which will make a difference on the highway. Unless you use it all the time, the 4x4 doesn't make that much of a difference these days, they're not as heavy as they used to be.

A 4x2 F-150, five speed manual coupled to a I300 will get you the best mpg. Somewhere in the high teens. With your setup you can expect somehere around 13-17mpg, depending on driving style and where you drive.

Is there anything else you can tell us about the truck? Has it been running bad? Is this a problem that has become significantly more noticable recently? Check engine light on? Anything you can tell us could give a clue. Let us know.

Not necessarily. What are you getting for fuel economy? If you are getting in the mid teens, I think that's pretty respectable for a full size pickup. If you are getting in the high teens, that's downright crazy good, because a lot of small pickups with small V6's don't even get that kind of fuel economy.

But if you're getting only 10mpg with the setup you have, then I would start sniffing around for a possible cause. Low rear end gearing? Worn out engine? Lot of city driving? Everything plays a part. I hope this helps. Don't settle for unreasonably poor fuel economy. Even a Hummer gets 8-10mpg.
