1987 Ford F-150 Transmission slips

I have a 1987 f150 6cyl with an automatic transmission. I start the truck warm it up and then put the truck in either drive or reverse ans sometimes I will need to wait till it "finds" the gear. When driving the truck constantly slips out of gear. Any suggestions, thanx

Start with the simple things. Check the tranny fluid level after having taken it for a drive and with the truck running. Check the shift linkage to see if it's adjusted correctly.
