My wife was taking the key out of the ignition and the external part of the tumbler fell out. It's about the size of a dime. I'm not sure how to put it back in or if I am supposed to replace it. Even without this piece, the key can still go in and turn. What is that piece for?

Thanks

Replace the ignition cylinder. Its real cheap and takes about five minutes to do. Turn key to run and under the ignition cylinder there will be a hole in the cover of the steering column, push a small punch into the hole and it will release the ignition cylinder then slide old one out and slide new one in.

Thanks for the quick response. Will I need to get a new key if I get a new ignition cylinder for my 02 explorer?
