I have over 155,000 miles on my 2002 Ford Explorer and I have never changed the transmission oil. I would like to keep it for as long as I can, but have been told not to change the oil now since I waited so long. The theory being that the detergents in the new oil will break up the deposits in the transmission which actually will cause more damage than just letting it go. What are your thoughts? Should I change it or not?

Hi linden. Nooo linden change the oil it has to be changed. There is a small possibility that the old fluid is holding a little of the disc coating together. And changeing will occasionally cause slipping. But usually trans that do this are already haveing probs. But it is guaranteed if you don, t change fluid filter trans will fail. And when this happens it could destroy the trans case thus requireing a complete trans opposed to a rebuild. Good luck billymac
