1997 Ford Explorer, roughlly 140,000k. All wheel drive, 8 cyl.

Yesterday while on cruse control, my heat went out and the temp gauge spiked into the red. When I slowed down and turnned off the heat, the gauge returned to normal. This occured several more time before I got home, without the heat on.

Is this a thermostat problem? Or is this a symtom of something more serious.

What it sounds like is that the fluid level could be low. Check the, fluid level, the belt for the water pump, the heat problem could have been from the low fluid. Check them out and let me know
