1995 Ford Explorer shifting

I cant get the tranny to go into third gear it doesnt grind the gears but it wont go in third all other gears are fine im putting a new clutch in so I have the tranny out any suggestions of how to remedy this would be great thanks

Before removing the trans, were you able to get it into 3rd gear with the engine off?

No I wasnt able to get it in third at all I bought it that way and drove it for awhile but the clutch was weak so im replacing it the other gears worked fine

If you couldn't shift it with the engine off, there is internal damage. It could be a shifter fork, bearing. The trans needs to come apart to identify the problem.
