1992 Ford Explorer weirdness in shifting, parking.

Yes, this is an old Explorer. It is almost mint, and has had, at 310,000 a new engine installed. Recently I had the tranny rebuilt, and have had problems ever since. The shop can't seem to fix it. There are two things: One, during take-off, under full-throttle, the transmission starts in second gear. Let off just a little, and it drops in to first, but not before you have been beaned by the 18-wheeler bearing down on you.

Second, about 7 out of ten times, when put into park, the transmission is still partially engaged. Giving it gas causes the engine to fight the transmission, which is in park, but clearly engaged as well. RPMs don't reach above 1700. When I turn the engine off while the transmission is in park, I can feel the strain release from the transmission.

So, there you go. What do you think?

This may seem too simple but did shop follow Ford on the adjustment to shift cable and T.V?

I had it back once and they told me they made adjustments to the shift cable. I'm not sure what T.V. Is.

Try this engine off park brake on place shifter in OD. Hang 3 lb weight on shifter. Raise truck release lock tab from bracket by pushinf downwad. Then disconnect cable from manual lever. Now move lever all the way rearward then forward 3 detents you will feel and hear. Reconnect cable and lock tabs to bracket. Check to see if shifter is in OD. If not turn thumb screw near shift indicator.
