I have a 1992 Ford Explorer. The transmission went out and I purchased a used replacement. Right before installing it I "I don't know why I did it" pulled the small center shaft on the transmission out about 1 inch. I then could not figure out how to push it back in. Now the torque converter doesn't go in far enough. My question is this: How do I get that small center shaft to go back in to the transmission?

That small shaft is the input shaft. It is splined into internal parts inside the transmission. Only one end of it will fit into the transmission, as the splines on each end are different from each other. It should fit in easily, and you may have to turn it a bit to line up with the internal spline. If you removed it completely, are you sure you put the correct end into the transmission? It should protrude about an inch from the larger spline.
