1997 Ford Expedition Periodic noises and the truck seems to

Seems as if there is an issue with the compressor that allows you to go 4H or AWD. Involuntarilly, the truck will make a horrible sound like a bad motor and within seconds the truck will slightly lift up on the suspension, usually only the right side. The sound goes off periodically, you can feel the truck lift up when you are standing in place. Could it be an issue with the 4wd selector?

Sound to me like you have air suspetion and the air pump is running check to see if your model has air suspetion if it does check for leaks on the side that rises or the solenoid valve for that corner, I dont think it has any thing to do with the 4wheel drive. My truck sometimes has trouble getting in and out of 4wheel drive.
