Knocking noise

Help! My son has a 93 Escort 1.9 motor, M/T. He drove it daily without any problems other than normal maintenence. Parked the car and restarted 15 minutes later and the engine was knocking quite loud. (Not so much as a spark knock prior to this) Towed the vehicle home, parked it in the yard. Several days later went to start the vehicle, and it wouldn't do anything. Found main power fuse blown, replaced. Vehicle starts but still have loud knocking noise in the engine. The noise sounds near the top end of the motor and sort of like when you're driving on the interstate and you ride the wake up strips on the edge of the road at 55 mph. Any ideas where a DIYer should start?

By chance have you pulled the dip stick and checked OIL? Very possible it is carbon under a valve. One other thing timing belt has sliped and pistons are hitting the valves. Or you have lost the OIL pump. Either way not good. Thoes engines are usualy trouble free as long as the maint is kept up they recomand the timing belt be replaced at 70 thousand miles.(NOS) 8)

We just had the oil changed in it about a week prior to this. We did check the oil and it is full and clean. I pulled the oil fill cap off and there seems to be plenty of lubrication in there. I haven't checked the timing belt as of yet but will do that first. Seems like it is the logical place to start since there was no prior indicators. Thanks, will let you know how it turns out
