I went to put the car into reverse and the shifter wouldn't budge out of park. A friend noticed that the brake lights werent coming on when I would hit the brakes. He said that there is some sort of sensor near the break pedal that is probably shorted and that's why the shifter won't move and the lights are out. Anybody know what this is called and how to repair it? Could it be sometthing else?

Make sure the fuse isn't blown first. A common problem. The shifter lockout won't release the lever until you step on the brake pedal but the brake lite circuit must have power to it and be working.
