Noises problem
1998 Ford Escort 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 245k miles

engine was running. Turning right and with a little gas, clicking was coming from the front of the car. Then the engine stalled. Tried to restart the engine and it did start but it sputtered and stalled again. Tried to start it again and the engine would not start. Starter started making a higher pitch noise than normal. What is the clicking from and do I have a bad starter, bad timing belt, or both?

The clicking could be coming from the starter relay-making high pitch whine not normal for the starter-drop it and investigate or replace it as you wish

Would a bad starter relay cause the engine to stall?

The starter relay only works when the engine fires-up but a bad ignition switch will

There was a fast metallic sounding clicking and then the engine stalled. I was trying to find out what would make it stall and if it could have been the tining belt or something else. The belt does appear to be in good shape though and not loose. I haven't been able to start it since and the starter is whining at a higher pitch.
