Why when a idle at stop light does the engine kill.

It could be several things. But most common is your idle air control valve. You must have this tested for faultiness. Also there is something that you could problable do yourself to keep your vehicle running and that would be to check your air filter and change your fuel filter, these are things that need to be done on a regular basis. Every now and then you can throw in a bottle of injector cleaner just to help maintain. But air filters are very important because if your engine can't breath then it will "die".
