Hi guys I have a ford escort p reg (1997) 1.6 lx and its driving me crazy! When I first got it it wouldnt tick over so I fitted a idle control valve thing on it and that dun the trick for that. Then when I went on motorway and go to accellerate (after about an hour and a half) I go to accelerate and then it holds back and just wont deliver the power and sounds very much like backfiriing but its not backfiring? I changed the coil pack as told by various people and it still done it so I changed ht leads (yet again) and put brand new spark plugs in. Will I ever see the end to this problem? I dont know what to do next with it :( hope you can help.

That has been checked and is fine. Is there anything else it could possibly be I had it on a engine management computer but had to force a connection through(this is at my raf camp) so probably not the most hi tech of equiptment. And it had no faults stored on the car. I have an inducvtion kit (which I will remove once I get my new air box sorted and I have a straight through exhaust from the cat back. Do I need more back pressure or anything like that? (When I first had the car there was a little resister in the airflow tube. Not the air flow meter a little more up than that before the air flow meter ) hope I can sort this out soon :) thanks for your help or suggestion :) it seems to have a flat spot its been described as? Hope this helps

Are O2 sensors hooked up and operating? At least 2 psi of backpressure is good.

Ok. Where do I find them 02 sensors and do I test them or replace or? Should I plug it into another engine management system diagnostics or something and see if anything comes up?

One in exhaust manifold other in exhaust pipe near CAT. A scanner will read O2 operation or put volt meter on orange/black wire at O2 in maniflod and gray wire on O2 after CAT. Meter on Mvdc scale should see 500 to 1000MV and changes as throttle is opened and closed.
