When should the rack-and-pinion be replaced or repaired. A tech told me that the driver side wheel was loose. And that I should get a rack-and-pinion rebuilt/replaced. Is this true.

how dangerous is a loose wheel. Ho could move it back and forth with his hands.

Go get yourself another tech. The first one is yanking your chain. You probably need to replace the tie rod end, probably both inner and outer on that side, or probably all four (both wheels). But not your rack and pinion. The only times that you need to replace that unit is when is is leaking or if the worm gear jumps a couple of teeth.

You would feel a "dead" spot when you turn your steering wheel. You would be driving along, turning a corner and the car keeps going straight. You would have to jerk the steering wheel for it to go to your direction.
