Background:
My car is a Ford Contour 1996 GL V6 2.5L with 82K miles on it. The car was bought in California, but currently used at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Problem:
One cold evening 2 month ageo (below -20 C), after started the engine, I heard the high pitch sound and then the engine speed went up and down for a while. During this period, the check engine light(CEL) was switched on. Other than CEL, the car has been running pretty good for the last 2 month.
Diagnosis:
Just wanted to know what is going on with the CEL, I Had the car checked at a repair shop yesterday and got the code P0430. I was told the cost is between 3K to 4K dollars to replace the converters. The shop reset the code, but the CEL went back on again today.
Question:
1. Did the cold weather cause the converters to fail?
2. Should I replace the converters?
3. With this code, is it a reasonable option to drive the cas as it is, since I do not feel anything wrong with it?
Thanks
