When you let off the accelerator there is excessive engine braking. Car coasts fine.

Due to this being a manual transmission this is really only an issue with the clutch. However, if this is different then what it was doing, I suspect you have an issue with the pressure plate. Clearly when you are in a manual transmission and you let off the accelerator, there is going to be drag because the clutch is still engaged and it is going to pull the engine down rather then coasting like when the clutch is depressed.

Unfortunately the only repair that would make sense is to go through the clutch system and inspect the flywheel and friction disc.

Here is a guide that gives some detail on this:

Let me know if I am misunderstanding the issue but it sounds like this is a clutch issue. Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Don’t think it’s the clutch! You expect an amount of engine braking when you let of the accelerator but this is extreme, as if your applying the brakes. The higher the revs when you let off the worse it is, makes it very difficult to drive the car smoothly. As my daughter is a new driver I thought it was the way she was driving. But when I tried I could tell there was something wrong. It’s only a 1.2l engine so I’m sure there shouldn’t be this much braking, it like there is something restricting the flow of gasses or a vacuum being created or something?

This is a gasoline engine correct? It is not offered in the USA so I just to make sure.

As for the amount of engine braking, you are correct that there will be some but if this is that bad, then I am hoping a video will help.

Can you get a video of just driving the speed it is the worst (in a safe place) and show the RPM when you are letting off the accelerator?

Also, I don't expect any codes but let's just make sure.

Then when you press the clutch in, the vehicle is fine? Thanks

I’m afraid I’ve been a bit confused. It’s an 2009 plate and a 1.2 engine. Apologies, I was confusing this car with the previous KA we had. I will make a vid and get back to you thanks.
