Will not stay running

2006 FORD EXPEDITION
200,000 MILES • 5.4L • 4WD • AUTOMATIC

Engine will start and run rough, can drive about 10-20 MPH for a bit then stalls out but will start again. Idles rough.

typically a bad coil pack when it does this in past, but this is worse....

local shop replaced coil pack and plugs but that was not this issue.

they say it may be something internal: timing chain, compression issues, something they do not want to do on the Ford 5.4 engine.. claim it will be $12,00.00 at minimum on an issue like this will be.

any ideas on what it could be and if this is a reasonable quote?

Hello my name is Dave.

First thing we need to know is if there are any codes in the computer. I would think there would be a check engine light on with the symptoms you have described. Here is a link to our tutorial on how to retrieve the codes in the computer:

If you can get the codes and let us know what they are that would be greatly helpful in narrowing down what your problem is. If there are no codes I would be suspicious of the ECU itself.
