How do you know it has been running hot if the gauge reads normal? Losing coolant? The first thing would be to verify it is running hot. For that you have a few options, use a non-contact thermometer to read the coolant temperatures at various points of the cooling system to find out what they are and compare them to each other. Another would be to use a scan tool to read the temperature from the ECT on the engine itself and the last would be to install a mechanical gauge into the cooling system to measure it on a temperature scale instead of the OEM cold normal hot gauge.
If you find it is running hotter than it should you need to determine which part of the system is the issue. It could be a partly plugged radiator, a bad cooling fan or water pump or even a failing head gasket. However the first thing is to map out the temperatures and see if it is truly hot. That engine normally runs around 215 degrees or so.
