Hello, I'm Danny.

By any chance is the check engine light on? If you don't have access to a scanner/code reader your local auto parts stores have a tool loaner and will rent you one. Also, some auto parts stores will check the codes for free. Here is a tutorial showing what is involved:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

If the check engine light is on get back to us with the information so we can properly diagnose your car.Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for using 2CarPros and hope this helps.

Good evening,

I would start with the spark plugs and the boots. Common for worn plugs and leaking boots.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

Injectors could also be the issue. Additives have no effect. They need to be cleaned professionally.

Make sure your filters are in good condition. Fuel and air.

air filter is good . when i got the car the code reader said multiple misfire i put new plugs in it the miss stopped about 75 percent then 400 miles later it came back and that has been 7,000 miles ago. i put new plugs in it last week but it was the same i put used coils on it two days ago and didn't change it.

Okay, used coils is never a good idea.

I would start with checking both the compression and the fuel pressure.

Will not cause a misfire. It would also code.

i put a new air filter in it it ran fine for 10 miles and the check engine light went out but then right back at missing again. Then i put a new air filter in it and it didn't change (drove it to auto parts store).

The air filter will not cause a miss.

You need to follow the suggestions I posted before as a start.

after my car warms up, i get an occasional misfire and my service engine light comes on. i had the code read and it was diagnosed as a misfire. i was told to change the plugs/wires. i changed the plugs, pcv, airfilter, ordered the wires and disconnected the battery to reset the service light. it ran like new for a few days, then it started acting up again with the service light coming back on. i still havent received the wire set. i only use bp, shell or mobil gas.

I have recently replaced the pressure plate, clutch, Release bearing, Master & slave cylinders. all was well until driving in fifth the gear pops into neutral especially above 3000 rpm. been advice to replaced the pressure plate again which maybe weak. the clutch pedal has also become too soft after replacement unlike the way it was, any helpful tips are welcome thanks.

Sounds like a mechanical problem in the clutch, did you machine the fly wheel, just to be on the safe side, get a mechanic to road test he will be able to say if it is clutch shudder or not.

My car was not starting and I had the distributor, spark plugs and wires replaced, I got the car back but in less than a week the car suddenly started shutting off when the car was idled. I took the car back to the mechanic who diagnosed the car and replaced the following parts: catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, amp sensor, coolant sensor, thermostat, thermostat gasket, crankshaft sensor and fuel filter. The engine light was on for almost six months before I took the car to the mechanic. The car is now jerking really badly when I reach between 50 and 60 mph, if I take my foot off the gas there is no jerking, it only happens when my foot is on the gas. Thanks.

The jerk feels like a hiccup and feels like the car is lunging forward. I drove the car this morning and could feel this "hiccup" when doing only 30 mph, but when reaching 50 mph it is louder and I can hear like a thump and feel it, when I take my foot off the gas it goes away. The jerk is more like boom boom boom, there is a pause after every boom.

What about cap and rotor? Were they new? Lots of misfires are due to cap/rotor defects/moisture.

When at idle try misting water from a spray bottle over the ignition system. Distributor cap and wires. See if this makes it run poor. If so I would start thinking ignition wires even if they are new, distributor cap/rotor and coil. Have the wires checked well. They are known to do this. Around the boots. Look for burn marks. I also think you may want to bring this back to the person that did all that work. After changing all the parts I would think this car should run well.

I took my car back to the mechanic who claimed my car was jerking on acceleration due to poor gas, when I got it from him I did not drove much so I could not tell if the car was fixed. I drove the car the next day and the jerking was still there. I am taking it back one more time and if not corrected I will go to a Toyota repair shop.
I am not a mechanic but work in it and know that if a problem pops up after working on a computer, it might be due to the last thing done on the computer.

Check transmission fluid first then scan for codes. For the tires check for balance and if okay then try moving to rear to see if it makes a difference. Have your front suspension checked as well.

Since this has a fuel injector on each cylinder, if you can reach the fuel injector plugs on each, you could disconnect each fuel injector wiring plug one at a time and listen if the engine rpm drops on each one. The one that does not drop is misfiring.
That is a lot safer then pulling each spark plug wire on the distributor cap one at a time, because that can create a spark and shock you but if you cannot reach the fuel injector plugs and want to pull and push the spark plug wires off and on the cap, make sure you wear some thick gloves and use insulated pliers.

When is it misfiring at idle, revved up?
If revved up at what rpm?
You may have to repeat that test at the rpm it misfires at.
Why do you think it is misfiring?
Is the engine shaking?

Car runs perfect until it warms up then start misfiring, plus code reader said it is ready for inspection.

Did you do that test once it was warmed up and started misfiring?
If not, you will have to do the test while it is misfiring.

Hello,

When you remove the spark plugs do they look different from the others? Let start with a compression test to make sure the engine is okay. These two guides will help us get started:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/engine-misfires-or-runs-rough

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-engine-compression

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response. Please run down these guides and report back.

Hi, I have a 1996 Corolla having misfire issues. I have been changing parts hunting for the fix and no luck so far. Changed EGR,IAT sensor, Plugs, wires, cap+rotor, Igniton coil, Distributor, fuel filter and still having issues. Car actually threw several codes coming home from work for random misfires before I did coil/distributor.
When the weather was colder, the car wouldnt misfire until 20 minutes of highway driving. Now with the new parts and temp outside being alot warmer, the car acts up within a block or two. Gonna start removing fuel pump next. Any other opinions would be great.

Fuel pump did not fix my problem. May have to have injectors serviced. Could a clogged Cat converter cause this? maybe too much back pressure causing issues?

Car was starting to misfire on occasion so I brought it to the mechanic. I now have new fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and coil. EGR was checked and seemed ok. Wires and cap were double checked for defects. The misfiring now is as bad, if not worse than before I brought it in. The misfiring can occur in any cylinder. Mechanic has checked wiring from fuse box to ignition and remains stumped Any suggestions as to what he needs to check for next?

Check compression on all cylinders. If OK, then ignitor is suspect.

Having checked and rechecked for air leaks and al, the mechanic was relectant to suggest what to focus on next. So I decided to buy a used distributor and substitute with existing one. Lo and behold the misfiring completly vanished. Now we will re-examine the distributor to see exactly what was responsible (ignitor, pick up coil or whatever) The opinion offered to my original query is in fact responsible for resolving the issue. Thank you!!!
