The engine light went on in my 2002 Ford Focus ZTS. The scanner I have keeps getting an error that it can't connect to the ECU and when I run the self diagnostics through the odometer, it comes back with r22 ; E001; and DTC NONE. The DTC NONE makes me think the light is malfunctioning, but I don't know how to confirm or fix. Can you help?

Are you using a cheap home brand scanner? If so you may have to get a read with a top end quality unit, cheap scanners are just that, cheap and don't work all that well.

No, this is a professional diagnostic application used via a laptop.

That's still just a low end DIY system. You need to try a professional scan tool. You may have a bad PCM but my money is on the scan tool.
