I just recently took my car to a Firestone to get my driver's side half axle replaced, all of that was well and done. As soon as I started driving out of the lot, I hear a loud and horrible clunking and grinding sound, took the car back to them and they showed me in the bay that it was the engine flailing around 5-6 inches dropped because the aluminum bracket holding it up had completely broken. Mainly I'm trying to figure out:

A. Was there foul play on their part or was it going to happen either way?
B. What kind of options am I looking for repair?

Good morning, MALACHI BAKER,

So, you didn't have this issue before going to Firestone? They only replaced the driver's side front C/V shaft?

The engine does flop around quite a bit if broken, but I would think you would have noticed beforehand.

Engine mounts do go on Nissan vehicles often, mainly the top passenger's side. We used to call it a dog bone.

I am adding a picture for you. Please let me know which number is broken.

Thank you,
Brendon

The break seemed to be about where (6) is, the technician showed me the break on the engine side of it since that's what was hanging down. The break looked to be about 6-8in long and 1-1 1/2in thick of solid aluminum.

Hello MALACHI BAKER,

So, with this mount from what I can see mounts the transmission. This is exactly where they would have been working. This mount in particular is very sturdy and hard to believe it just broke. I also find it hard to believe that they didn't notice that it was broken if it indeed came in with the issue.

They would have had to pry up on the engine maybe or they set up the lift wrong and pushed up on the motor.

Here is a video from Hayne's showing how this axle is supposed to be replaced just for your information:
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=2014+nissan+rouge+drivers+side+axle+replacement&view=detail&mid=DE7EE4287959848D2340DE7EE4287959848D2340&FORM=VIRE

As you can see there would be no reason to have to move the motor. It's a pretty easy job.

Also, I can't understand how they drove it out of the shop and didn't notice the broken mount. I mean you heard it as soon as you started to drive away. To me that seems like someone made a mistake, broke something and tried to hide it.

You can get the part cheaper if you go to Nissan's official website for parts:
https://parts.nissanusa.com

The part is around $300-$400 Retail.

I found this as a part number for you:
112204BA0B

However, to make sure it is the exact part I would go on this site and put your VIN in to either get the part or at least the retail price.

Also, the labor time to replace this part according to Nissan is:
1.7 hrs.

I would strongly advise not going aftermarket for this type of part as it may fail prematurely.

With parts and labor, the job should be around $600-$700.

So, to answer your question I think someone may have broken it accidentally, but it is hard to tell. I would take a look underneath the engine or the transmission especially and look for any tool or jack marks and take a photo of anything you find.

One thing I will point out is as a technician you always keep an ear out for noises, vibrations, anything. They would have had to test drive it after doing the repair so they would have heard the noise. Also, these guys at places like Firestone get upsells, so if they find another repair that has to be done and the service advisor sells the work, they get a kick back for finding the issue. So, they are or at least should be on the lookout for other issues.

As far as repair option I would go back and speak with the manager. Tell them you want this issue fixed and you want the Nissan part installed. I am sure they will work with you.

In my opinion it is best to stay away from those places and find a good local mechanic. These are usually young guys that need to be babysat. Yes, everyone needs to start somewhere but that doesn't mean it has to be your vehicle. But even the best techs can make costly mistakes and anyone who says they don't is lying.

I am adding an image of the part and retail price as well as the labor times for you.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help any further.

Thank you,
Brendon
